HONO TAI

2022 - AUJ.

The aim of our surveillance project is to monitor better the cetaceans populations, more particularly the humpack whales, inside the French Polynesia sanctuary by studying the risk of collision.
To do so, our team realizes observations from the ferry boats operating in the channel between the islands of Tahiti and Moorea. Operating on-site allows us to better understand these unfortunate collisions to then be able to anticipate and prevent them in the future.
No such program existed before in French Polynesia.

Traffic at sea is responsible of collissions with cetacians. Hence it is today a major threat, even being most of the time muted.

Other threats

The MMO's mission is to observe the surroundings at sea using binoculars to see further.
This person should be standing on the deck permanently to be able to share with the Captain and crew any observation, in order to prevent collissions.
